What is Ozone Therapy?
What is Ozone?
Ozone is a molecule composed of 3 atoms of Oxygen (O3). Ozone makes your hemoglobin red blood cells drop off their cargo, which is Oxygen. Ozone also makes your red blood cells able to bend and flex to squeeze into areas of your body that it couldn’t get to otherwise, and that is where they drop off the Oxygen. Once delivered to the right place, Oxygen can go to work healing your body. Oxygen fuels your mitochondria (the powerhouses of your cells) so they can generate energy in the form of ATP. Ozone also stimulates stem cells. Ozone promotes and speeds up healing.
How is Ozone administered into the human body?
Ozone can be given in different forms, including Ozone Gas Injection, Ozone Glycerin Injection, Intravenous Ozone Gas (such as “10 Pass”), Intravenous Ozone Glycerin (this is also called “10 Pass”), Ozone Gas Insufflation, Topical Ozone Glycerin, and Ozone Glycerin IV. Another word for Ozone Injections is Prolozone (note, this is NOT the same as what they call Prolotherapy; Prolotherapy can be very painful, and it does NOT have Ozone in it). “DIV” is another term for Ozone Gas Injection (Direct Intravenous Ozone). For more details, see the Treatment Descriptions on Dr. Robert Rowen’s website, https://drrowendrsu.com/services/. If you want to know more about Dr. Robert Rowen and his wife Dr. Su, click here. Dr. Rowen and Dr. Su have been raising awareness of Medical Ozone Therapy for many years.
In Dr. Rowen’s YouTube videos, you often see him do Ozone Gas Injections. However, Dr. Rowen’s main method of ozone administration is actually Hyperbaric Ozone (HBO3), which is sometimes referred to as “10 Pass” (because they do 10 passes). Please do not confuse this with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). What is the difference? HBO3 is when the stick a needle in your arm, take out blood, your blood goes into a glass bottle where it is mixed with pressurized Ozone Gas, then they return your blood to you through a needle in your other arm. In contrast, HBOT is when they put your entire body into a giant human-sized tennis ball canister (a big cylinder), and they pressurize the entire cylinder, so your ears pop like you are on an airplane, then they pump oxygen into the cylinder, and they believe the air pressure will make your blood plasma in your body push more “good stuff” like oxygen into your tissues. HBOT does NOT improve blood viscosity, but HBO3 does, see Dr. Rowen video at timestamp 39 minutes, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp5OTIwQ9gI. Ozone improves blood viscosity!
Before Rowen invented HBO3, the standard for ozone administration was MAH – Major Autohemotherapy. This is where they take 400 ML of blood, enrich it with ozone, then put it in Patient’s vein. There is no “hyperbaric” pressurization done.
Dr. Rowen thinks that HBO3 is a superior way to get ozone into you, as compared to MAH, because more ozone is dissolved into the blood. They vacuum up 200 cc of blood into a glass bottle, then pump 200 cc of ozone into the bottle under pressure, then return the ozonated blood back to the patient (this is “one pass”). They repeat this for a total of 10 passes. Please note, not everyone is a good candidate for HBO3 (10 Pass) because you must have “good size veins” for this procedure. Approximately 3 out of 10 people have veins that are too small for this procedure. For those people, Direct Intravenous Ozone Gas Injections (DIV) are an option.
There is also something called EBOO – This is Ozone Dialysis aka Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation. Blood is taken from one arm, passed into dialysis machine while exposed to Ozone at the same time, then returned in the other arm.
Please note, Ozone Injections can be either OZONE GAS or OZONE LIQUID. Injectable Ozone is often referred to as PROLOZONE, where they inject you first with Procaine and some other stuff, then they inject you with Ozone Gas. If your medical practitioner says they are injecting PROLOZONE, please note, that typically means there have to be TWO INJECTIONS: (1) Prolozone liquid containing Procaine, vitamins, minerals, etc; and (2) Ozone Gas. They are not mixed together in a single injection syringe! You get two shots, see? One liquid, and one gas, see?
To watch a demo of exactly how an Ozone Gas Injection is done, watch this Dr. Rowen video from one of his 2022 Training Workshops, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSOJUVMqECQ&t=6s, where he injects a man’s Frozen Shoulder with a syringe of red liquid (this is a liquid made of Procaine, Vitamin B12 (that is what gives it that red color),and other vitamins and minerals), then Dr. Rowen leaves the syringe needle in the man’s shoulder, pulls out the vial (all the red liquid is gone), then he immediately replaces it with a vial of Ozone Gas (it looks like there is nothing in that vial, but it is filled with Ozone Gas). After the injection is done, the man is able to move his shoulder above his head.
Starting in 2024, Dr. Rowen has been researching OZONE GLYCERIN. It is possible to inject OZONE GLYCERIN mixed with Procaine and other stuff. In other words, it is just 1 injection instead of 2. However, Patients often feel immediate relief with OZONE GAS, but not with OZONE GLYCERIN! OZONE GLYCERIN has a slower effect, but over time, you get more ozone into the body in just one shot. The glycerin is seen by the body as sugar, and like all sugars, it attracts water, so you will see swelling or a “fluid pocket.” OZONE GLYCERIN takes 4 weeks to fully clear out of the body, so the swelling and “fluid pocket” should be gone in 4 weeks. Finally, the downside of OZONE GAS injections is that they are hard on veins.
Starting in 2025, Dr. Rowen mentioned on his Substack that he has a colleague who has been getting good results with Ozone Glycerin delivered intravenously (OZONE GLYCERIN IV).

I heard that Ozone is not “FDA approved.” What does this mean?
You may have heard that Ozone is not “FDA approved.” Let’s explain this.
The FDA has not approved any oxygen-ozone mixture “as a method of preventing, improving, treating, or curing any condition.” No form of ozone or oxidation therapy has been approved by the FDA. The National Registry and FDA state that ozone has no medical indications and is a dangerous gas.
The FDA regulations at 21 CFR 801.415 state that “Ozone is a toxic gas with no known useful medical application,” see https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/chapter-I/subchapter-H/part-801/subpart-H/section-801.415. This statement was put into the CFR in February 1976 and has never been updated based on new information, see 41 FR 6896 (PDF page number 144 of 332), https://www.federalregister.gov/citation/41-FR-6896.
This is despite the fact that Ozone Therapy is used in other countries. For example, in Germany, Ozone is mandatory after surgery (go to timestamp 10:20 of this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RbYD5yaAM8, where Dr. Howard Robyns MD explains how Ozone is used in Germany). In 2011, the Spanish Ministry of Health included Ozone Therapy in the portfolio of services for pain, see https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8904924/. A university in Spain has created a chair of Ozone Therapy to better promote training and research. In Portugal and Greece, Ozone Therapy has a specific regulation and is used in public and private centers. In Brazil, Ozone Therapy is authorized for use in dentistry and medicine (they enacted a specific law in 2023 to formally authorize Ozone Therapy), see https://aepromo.org/en/brazil-by-law-ozone-therapy-is-authorized-throughout-the-national-territory/.
